It seems like there are a growing number of children that are caught bringing weapons to school these days. One of the reasons for this is because there are more and more children being bullied every day. They feel like they are more protected if they bring a weapon into school. Some kids will bring guns, others bring clubs, and some bring knives. Research showed that over 200,000 high school students per year bring some type of weapon to school with them.
The researchers of this new study also found that 9% of bullied kids chose to bring a weapon to school and 5% of the kids that had never been bullied had brought one to school. These did not include the kids who were badly bullied. 72% of them took a weapon and had it at school with them. The badly bullied students were ones that had been injured with a weapon or threatened with one by their tormenters. It also included students who had been victims of theft and assault. Many had been absent from school and they did not feel safe showing up.
Out of that 72% of students, 63% reported that they had brought a gun to school with them over the last month. This was the only way that they could feel safe at the schools because nothing was ever done about the bullying. Peers and teachers just stood by and let it happen.
A study conducted in 2011 showed that approximately 20% of the high school student body had been bullied at one time or another over the previous year. The CDC conducted this study and looked at the different risk factors such as theft and assault that would prompt the students to bring a weapon to school. They found that the more factors that the bullied student experienced, the more likely they were to find a weapon to bring to school with them.
