His family was poor, his mother homeschooled him, and now he’s getting a PhD at Harvard

Octavious Talbot is on his way to Harvard University for a doctorate degree at just 20 years old.  Talbot, a Chicago native, graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta this year with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a 3.87 GPA.  But the road to academic achievement has been very trying for Talbot.

Talbot grew up the youngest of seven children in Southwest Chicago.  Because his family struggled financially, they did not always have reliable transportation to take Talbot to and from the private Catholic school he was attending.  “I had to try to find a ride to school and then getting back was a struggle,” he explained. “I would be up there for 10 hours watching YouTube videos and doing my homework until I finally found a ride.”
