It seems as though every week there is a new story about a school shooting. Horrifying images of scared students running from classrooms. Parents terrified that their children were involved. Police surrounding the school with their guns drawn as the SWAT team descends on the school. All of this is followed by public outcry. What can we do to stop this? How do we make our children safe? Some parents are fed up with the lack of action by the government and the states so they are taking matters into their own hands.
Ed Burke is the CEO for the company Bullet Blocker which is based in Massachusetts. He and his company have started to sell one of the hottest new products out there that honestly they should never have had to make in the first place. Parents are clamoring for Bullet Blocker’s bulletproof backpacks. Burke says that business sales grow every time there is a school shooting but he certainly is not happy about that fact.
President Barack Obama spoke about gun control stating that it is frustrating to him that the people of this country do not want to do more to keep guns out of the hands of someone who could do seriously damage to another person. There have been some states that have been successful in passing gun control laws but there are no federal laws to back them up.
Joe Curran, one of the co-founders of Bullet Blocker, developed the bulletproof backpack after the shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999. He wanted his children to be a little safer when they went to school. He also developed school survival kits that have everything a student would need in case of an emergency or disaster where they were trapped in the school. These products have not come in to the retail market just yet but Curran hopes that someday soon they will.
