How a Home-school Co-op Is Structured

By: Krystle Crossman

Home-schooling can be a daunting task for someone who has never gone through it before. There is a lot of information out there but they may not know where to find it. How do you know what works and what doesn’t work? It is helpful if you have others around that understand what home-schooling is and how to effectively run it. This is where a co-op comes in.

Home-school co-ops are run by the parents of the children. Each co-op has a different set of rules and runs things differently. It is good to get a new perspective from another parent that has been through it to see what works best in a non-traditional school setting. One of the best parts about a co-op is that the parents all bring something different to the table. One may be extremely knowledgeable in science but not in math, while another is really good with numbers. One of the great things about a co-op is that the kids get to learn with other kids that are home-schooled like them. They get to play in sports teams and go on field trips. The mothers also benefit as many co-ops will have a mother’s night out event every now and then.

Many co-ops will follow some sort of schedule in order to keep things organized. It may seem like this is like a traditional school at this point but even if they have a schedule and classrooms, it is still very different. The learning styles that are explored in co-ops are more immersive and interactive than those in a traditional school. The parents will think of fun games or ways that the children can learn while playing outside. They will let them explore their creative sides with projects and games. It is not an environment where the children sit in a stuffy classroom focused on taking notes from what the teacher is writing down on the board in front of them.

One of the best parts about the co-ops is that the parents can decide on the curriculum, the teaching styles, and what the schedule should be like. They have total control over everything and bring a multitude of expertise from everyone who is involved. This helps the kids immensely.
