A new app is coming that is made just for kids and it seems like a brilliant move on Youtube’s part. The online video streaming giant will be releasing an app in the near future that is just for kids. It will be a safe option for children to watch the shows and videos that they want to watch without all of the adult content that lurks in Youtube no matter what you are watching. This app is set to be launched early this coming week, around February 24th or so.
The basis of the app is that kids will have a safe environment to watch the videos they want to watch and parents can take comfort in knowing that their children are not going to see something that they shouldn’t be seeing. Youtube Kids will feature full parental controls. It also has a timer that parents can set so that when the timer is up the app shuts off and the children cannot watch videos again until their parents start a new timer.
While some people feel that this is something that is just an excuse to give kids more screen time there are many that feel it’s a great move on Youtube’s part. Many of the shows that are supposed to be shows for children are not educational in the least and teach children things that they probably shouldn’t. However will full parental controls on the Youtube Kids app they will be able to control the things that their kids can and cannot watch. Even in the search function kids can type in a phrase that could lead to some very adult content on the regular Youtube app but not in the children’s app.
The app is a smart investment for the video service as television is slowly becoming a thing of the past. Many people are now watching their favorite shows online on streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. There are many kid’s shows on there so cable providers have been taking a hit since most television content is readily available online. Rick Newman, Yahoo Finance columnist, states that it is a great idea for Youtube because the younger that you hook the kids the longer they will stick with that service.
