Montrez Jefferies of Durham, North Carolina has not had the easiest life and he is only 18. Jefferies admits that he has done a lot of things in the past that he is not proud of and made a lot of bad decisions. When he was in high school he was involved with gangs. He was not an honest person and did a lot of things that he wishes that he hadn’t done. This was how he ended up at Center of Hope, a homeless shelter that is run by the Durham Rescue Mission.
The shelter helps people who have no home by giving them a place to stay, food, training and job placement. Jefferies has been making a huge turnaround in his life and is started on a path to becoming a better person. Nothing shows this more than an act of kindness that he displayed recently. He found a $500 money order lying on the ground while out walking one day. He stated that a few years ago he wouldn’t have thought twice about going somewhere and cashing it. But now thanks to the training and help he has been getting at the shelter (and thanks to some wise words from his mother ringing in his ear) he didn’t think once about cashing it. Instead he had the shelter help him to track the woman down so he could give it back to her.
The owner was found and she was very grateful for what Jefferies did for her. Not many people would have in that situation. The owner of the money order works two jobs and was so thankful that she brought along some restaurant gift cards for him when she picked the money order up at the shelter. Not only did Jefferies receive these gift cards but an internet funding site was set up for him that in just three days has raised over $3,300 for the young man. It may seem like a small act of kindness to some but for the woman who would have lost the money that she worked so hard to earn it was one of the biggest gestures that she could think of. Jefferies states that he hopes to get his life back on track and go to college soon and hopefully the money raised for him will help him to do just that.
