A 63-year-old white teacher found herself on the wrong side of the law after a video emerged of her slapping a Black student. The teacher, Mary Hastings, was slapped with administrative leave following the incident.
The said video showed Hastings swipe papers off a student’s desk before pouncing on him with multiple slaps, according to the police.
Hastings is visibly angry in the video, and she’s heard, saying, “…because you’re stopping him from graduating you idiot a**.” Although it isn’t clear what or who she’s referring to, the teacher went ahead to scold the student for being a disruption in her class.
The video also shows the teacher acting like she’s mocking the student after beating him up.
No details have, however, been released on what transpired that made the teacher so mad towards the student.
The teacher is now facing an assault charge over the video which was captured by one of the victim’s classmates. The student who recorded the video said the incident took place last Friday during morning hours.
Following the incident, Beaumont Independent School District spokesperson Nakisha Burns released a statement in which she acknowledged that the district was aware that Hastings had been arrested for assaulting a student.
“The Beaumont Independent School District can confirm that an Ozen High School teacher was arrested today for physically assaulting a student,” she said. “The conduct was substantiated by video footage viewed by BISD police and administration.”
Burns sought to assure everyone that the district is concerned about students’ safety and that they do all within their means to ensure that.
“The District is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students,” she said.
Burns specifically condemned Hastings’ assault act and said the district doesn’t condone such outbursts.
