America’s most visible basketball dad is making big headlines everywhere by becoming the latest parent to join the nation’s homeschooling movement.
LaVar Ball (pictured left) is no stranger to going viral or making a big splash in the media for his bombastic personality, outrageously bold predictions (some of which have ended up being true) and the man’s dedication to his three sons who are all involved in the great sport of basketball.
Ball’s eldest son Lonzo is a former star point guard for the men’s basketball club at UCLA. Ball aggressively promoted his son Lonzo before this year’s NBA Draft by using a ton of brilliant antics, including turning down deals with all the major athletic shoe companies so that he could start a family-owned shoe label for his son called the Big Baller Brand.
The $400 dollar price tag Ball came up with for Lonzo’s new shoes outraged people in the public but nevertheless, it kept everyone talking about Lonzo. Now Ball’s eldest son is a member of the Los Angeles Lakers with his first multimillion-dollar professional basketball contract.
Ball also has two younger sons named LiAngelo and LaMelo (pictured right). LiAngelo is currently a basketball star for the UCLA Bruins. He is experiencing his freshman year in college. However, Ball’s very talented youngest son is about to take a step toward his academic future, which is different from his two older brothers.
According to ESPN, Ball has decided to take his youngest son LaMelo out of traditional high school for his last two years. Ball has firmly stated that he will be homeschooling LaMelo to prepare him for college and beyond. Ball pulled his son out of Chino Hills High School outside Los Angeles for some serious concerns.
“It’s a new coach and I don’t like him one bit. [LaMelo]’s on track for UCLA, but he doesn’t have to be dealing with those knuckleheads. I’m not letting them mess with his head anymore. You can put that on the principal and the coach over there,” Ball said, according to ESPN.
He also cited other “distractions” that are going on at Chino Hills High that he does not want to see his son affected by. Ball also will continue to train his son so that he can be ready to follow in the footsteps of his brothers and attend UCLA as a basketball player.
Hate him or love him, there is no denying that LaVar Ball is a brave marketing genius who is formulating a blueprint for his family’s financial success. When you look past the controversial bravado that sometimes comes out of his mouth, you can appreciate the image he’s projecting of a strong black man who is a good father to his children.
