8th Grader Says School Kicked Her Out Because Of Her Mother’s Behavior

By: Krystle Crossman

Maia Wu went to Monterey Highlands Elementary School in California and was student class president as well as a 4.0 GPA student. That was, until she and her siblings were kicked out of the school. They had asked to have an inter-district transfer so that they could continue going to the school even though they lived outside of the school’s district. Normally this is something that can be done. But this time, they decided to revoke the request.

Maia has asked the school board to reconsider. She says that they kicked her and her two siblings out of the school, not because of anything they did, but because they were angry at her mother who stood up for her children’s right to go to the school that they wanted to. The school board did not like the way that Maia’s mother handled the situation and so Maia says that this is the reason that she is not allowed to attend her school anymore.

Maia made a video and put it on Youtube explaining the story. It has well over 19,000 views. She stood before the school board and asked them to reconsider their decision. She said that she and her siblings just want to finish out the school year at their school even though what was being done to them was completely unfair to her family. The school district made a statement that said that they did not do this out of malice or contempt for anything that has happened with the students. They said that they just felt that it was in the best interest of everyone that the children attend a school in their own district.

Wu said that she and her siblings would be back and when they came back they would have people with them who had similar stories and together they would be heard. A petition has been started on Change.org for the students to get back into the school and already has almost 900 signatures.
